MARK MAKING / CARBON LAB / MONOTYPE MASH-UP | Santa Fe | April 1-4, 2020
This class is also offered September 25-28
Develop your personal visual language and "capture" some carbon! We will work with encaustic painting, monotype printmaking and mark-making with ink and graphite. Works will be made on and off of the Roland HOTbox™.
This popular class is loaded with informative and fun activities designed to help you create outside of your habitual ways of working. It is inspired by techniques Paula developed for use in her own work.
Day 1: We are introduced to meditative Zen philosophy as it applies to our works. In one activity, we freely engage the whole body using big brushes and mops with India ink on “body-size” paper. Extending this experience, we create invented marks with found tools, explore expression and composition, and find what is meaningful to us in our newly developing visual language.
Explorations continue while creating encaustic monotypes on the Roland HOTbox™ and with encaustic paintings with carbon materials. We use India ink and/or graphite in liquid, solid, and powder forms. These are freely combined and layered with encaustic. We also use powerful heat lamps to reveal surprising special effects.
Discussions address artists using carbon as both material and content, and carbon’s historical and environmental implications in times of climate change.
