MARK MAKING / CARBON LAB / MONOTYPE MASH-UP, Santa Fe, MARCH 19-22, 2019
This class is also offered September 10-13, 2019.
Develop your personal visual language and "capture" some carbon! We will work with encaustic painting, printing, and mark-making and ink.
This popular class is loaded with informative and fun activities designed to help you create outside of your habitual ways of working. Paula Roland presents this exploratory workshop using carbon-based art materials, including graphite and India ink, in works made on and off of the Roland HOTbox™.
In this popular workshop, we are introduced to meditative Zen philosophy as it applies to our works. In one activity, we freely engage the whole body using big brushes and mops with India ink on “body-size” paper. Extending this experience, we create invented marks with found tools, explore expression and composition, and find what is meaningful to us in our newly developing visual language. Explorations continue while creating encaustic monotypes on the Roland HOTbox™ and encaustic paintings with carbon materials, including ink and/or graphite in liquid, solid, and powder forms. These are freely combined and layered with encaustic. Works may utilize color or a range of black/white/grey. Also popular are experiments in fusing encaustic and carbon materials with powerful heat lamps to reveal surprising special effects. Discussions address artists using carbon as both material and content, and carbon’s historical and environmental implications in times of climate change. Register soon, this class fills quickly! All materials and supplies are provided, except panels.
