4-Day ENCAUSTIC PAINTING AND MONOTYPE: Developing Composition | Santa Fe | March 12-15, 2020
A new workshop!
A similar 2-Day "Sampler" workshop is offered June 9-10.
In this workshop we will cover the basics of Encaustic in both painting and monotype and, and guided by fun exercises, use the monotypes to generate ideas for composition in our paintings. There will also be plenty of work time for you to explore your own ideas in wax.
With encaustic painting, we cover safe practices, grounds and substrates, fusing with torch, lamp, and heat gun. Further topics: translucency, glazing, texture, smooth surfaces, layering, scribing, excavating, wax and oil stick, stencils, image transfers and more.
With encaustic monotype printing we cover: Ways to navigate the Roland HOTbox and use it effectively. We will cover tools, techniques and approaches, including additive and subtractive ways of working, and aim for a balance of spontaneity and structure in the work. We gain experience with a range of papers, and each with their own quirks and peculiarities. We will create layered “passes” for depth, translucency, and blended color and will learn the interdependent variables (temperature, wax, paper, pigment load).
In summary, this workshop :
- Is an overview of many techniques for encaustic painting and printmaking
- Provides interesting exercises that quickly inform ways of working in a fun way
- Will cover comprehensive health and safety for encaustic and utilizes artist-grade, archival materials
